Jill I can't wait to post on this, but if you saw my post on Edward and Bella, you might realize, it will take me pages to discuss this topic. I'm afraid it won't be tonight. Besides I'm kind of an opinion bully and I want to give others a chance to share before I cram my way of thinking down anyones pretty throat.
I have lots of different feelings on this too. I believe SM thinks it made their relationship stronger, I guess we'll never know for sure though. I think Edward's absence is what strengthened their relationship the most, with or without Jacob that was going to happen. Once Edward was back he had to deal with something new and different, his true love having this other relationship. It was hard for him, SM says he was jealous. Normally I'd say that would be good in a way for him to see her in this manner, and possibly appreciate her more. But come on, this is Edward, he could never love or appreciate Bella any more than he does, can he? Of course in the end of Eclipse when Bella had to realize her feelings for Jacob, and see the kind of human life she could have had, I'm sure it proves that much more how much she loves Edward. But I think she really already knew this in New Moon. So I don't know what I think about this for sure. I'd like to hear how others feel, and think about this more. Thanks for bringing it up though, it's a good one to contemplate, especially while reading Eclipse.
Very thought provoking question- to add my 2 cents worth-i don't think it made it any stronger- I think it just helped Bella & Edward realize the type of love it is. I think had Edward not left, Bella would have never had her epiphany- which I think she needed to know. More than Bella's relationship with Jacob- I think that their time apart is what made it stronger. They both saw that they were not whole without the other nor were they truly happy. jillikie
