Are you sick of me yet? Just a quick question-what's with Rosalie, really? I get that she is totally a brat, but why else does she hate Bella so much? She says in Twilight that Bella is putting them all in danger, but they're virtually indestructable as vampires, so what is it? Is it that she increases their chances for being recognized as vampires and then they'd have to leave? I understand why she doesn't think Bella should become a vampire (from Eclipse), but her logic seems to come from concern about Bella and regrets she might have. Did I read the books too fast and I missed the part where she starting caring about Bella's well being? Help me, wise ones.

Hi Jill,
Seriously, we'll never get sick of you. I fear it might be the other way around, because there's a lot of Twilight to come still (ie. book 4 & Midnight Sun).
You know, I think that Rosalie is a very interesting character. I actually do like her better now. She's a good one to try to dissect. I read everything that Mary Ann wrote you in response to Rosalie, and I feel pretty much the same. I do think the number one reason, is jealousy. I think Edward says that somewhere and some point in the series. And I've read some of the things that Stephenie has said about her. She's jealous of Bella's humanity, of Edward's feelings for her, of her acceptance from the rest of the Cullens, etc. Then of course she's angry of her putting their family in danger. But I still think that's fueled from her jealousy. It seems like even at the beginning of New Moon, after the Bday party disaster, Bella says she thinks she sees a smug look on Rosalies face. And Bella is nervous about seeing her because she and Emmet had been gone to Africa or Europe or something for a few months. Do you guys remember that? Anyway, she's someone I'd like to learn more about.

Hey I am forwarding Trisha's response to everyone, in case you want to get in on the discussion. Soon I am going to have a Twilight Blog so that it will be easier to follow and add to our discussions. But until then, thanks for enduring endless Twilight e-mail. (Of course true fans get sad when they don't see any Twilight e-mail. When I had to e-mail Erin something about boring old regular life, Dave thought it was hilarious that I titled the e-mail "not Twilight- sniff." But it's true isn't it? )
I wanted to ammend some of my original thinking. After reviewing Twilight, Rosalie was not anywhere close to accepting Bella at the end. I think the James trauma made it worse. Look at all that danger, thanks to the human Edward won't change. Bella says at the end of Twilight that she's made no progress with Rosalie, even though Emmett likes her now.
Then Rosalie couldn't get to know Bella better during that summer because she and Emmet were gone (like Trisha said). I think the catalyst for her change in feelings was when Bella saves Edward in Italy. Rosalie really does feel sorry, and Bella proves her love beyond anything when she is willing to face the "real Vampires" to save Edward. Remember Rosalie clarifies her "no" vote at the end of New Moon. She says it is not that she is opposed to Bella as a sister. Trisha forgot to add a point she made to me, that Rosalie is even jealous of Bella and Alice's relationship.
All great points. Stephenie said that everything she wrote in Eclipse was to help Bella face her decision. I think Rosalie's story plays a vital role in Bella facing everything she will give up. So lets give Rosalie credit for that. And of course Rosalie got Emmet, but Bella's thinking how she has "so much more to gain" about becoming a vampire, and that holds true for me. Stephenie Meyer says she doesn't think she would be brave enough to make the choice, but I say, Bella has so much to gain, she's already experiences that, it makes her brave.

Hi All,
I'm glad I waited for this response - Mary Ann I was going to disagree with you (doesn't ever happen) when you said that Rosalie was getting used to Bella at the end of Twilight. Just like you all said, I think that she doesn't even warm up at all until what happens in Italy. Remember too in some SM answer about the Prom Re-mix, that the way Rosalie was helping Alice get Bella ready - didn't really fit in to the character that still wasn't completed yet (Rosalie) - if that makes sense, so that was another reason she couldn't keep that fun part. I definately love the way her feelings change and fluxuate with every scary/dangerous thing that happens. Wow - it's amazing that someone could write so much and still have it all fit perfectly together. It was hard for me with Rosalie's character. I am too much like how Bella reacted - awestruck at her beauty, comparing myself to others ALL THE TIME! So I didn't ever really decide how I felt about Rosalie and her relationship to Edward and everything. I am so very glad that we learn her story in Eclipse. It really made me appreciate her reactions to everything a lot better. And looking back after I make myself appreciate Eclipse - Rosalie's chapter so needed to be there. Like you guys already said...Bella needs to see every single option and consequence and realize what she really is going to give up if she chooses to become immortal. I need to go back and read Bella reaction to Rosalie's story - I don't remember, does she even waiver...OH CRUD - I don't have my book. Oh well, I guess someone will have to remind me tomorrow (so excited by the way!).
I admitted to MA (that's Mary Ann - thought it would fit right in, hee hee) that my stomach lurched (both) times when I read the Jacob kiss....actually I didn't read that part the second time through (I was rebelling) - funny! Anyway, my stomach did lurch when I saw the life that Bella might have had with Jacob - I did pause and think...wow, that is a lot to give up. I did even stray far enough into the book to look at my kids and family and get sad - what if I didn't have them? But then, I yanked myself back into reality, trying to talk myself into the fact that it IS just a book - man relax!!
Anyway, sorry to babble...but it was fun!
See you tomorrow!
Erin

Dear Friends,
I think you have covered everything about Rosalie. Just one thought in Rosalies favor- her biggest dream never was nor will it be fulfilled and that is to have a family. She has, I believe, the relationship she dreamed of with Emmet but still no children (remember it was Emmets eyes that reminded Rosalie of her friends child eyes that made her carry him back to Carlise). As much as it is what Rosalie wanted, I don't think it is a big want of Bella's. Bella, I feel has a more real family experience with the Cullen's than with her own Mom and Dad. I think even though she sees her and Jacob with some children- she is still willing to give that up- because she is so complete with her and edwards realtionship. However, in my own secret wishes- I would wish that she and Edward could have a child- could you imagine Edward as a dad? Could you imagine how much more he would Love Bella at that moment of holding his first child. For me, it is the only thing that makes their relationship difficult- Just because I know what having children has done for me and for my relationship with my husband.
So, I know this is an older post, but now that I'm reading Eclipse I have come across something new (to me anyway) that didn't even register the first time I read it. But it's something else that further describes Rosalie's feeling toward Bella. It's the chapter when Rosalie tell's Bella all about her life story. Of course there's all the reasons we've already said, like how she's jealous that Bella's human, and that it's hard to have her know (someone on the outside) about them, and then that she's jealous that Edward found Bella more attractive than her, he wanted Bella not Rosalie. She admits how she's vain enough to let that bother her. Rosalie apologizes for not being fair to her with how she's treated her, and Bella says, "but you still don't like me?" And Rosalie says, "I'm sorry about that." Bella asks her what she's done and Rosalie says "you haven't done anything, not yet anyway." Bella has no idea what she means. I'm actually going to insert the paragraph that I read.
"Don't you see, Bella? You already have everything. You have a whole life ahead of you - everything I want. And you're going to just throw it all away. Can't you see that I'd trade everything I have to be you? You have the choice that I didn't have, and you're choosing wrong!"
Rosalie says this all very passionately, even moreso than when she told her story before. So I found that very interesting. She's basically angry at Bella's choice, she wants her life so badly and the choice seems so simple to make, yet it's different than Rosalie's. In a way it's another way to show that Rosalie is vain or maybe arrogant, because she doesn't like Bella because Bella doesn't think the same as her, and in her mind, that's the right way to think. I'm sure Rosalie believes that she has hindsight on this, but that Bella has the choice. I can't understand all of Rosalie's thinking on this because would she be willing to give up Emmett if she could change lives? I wouldn't think so. We know how much she loves Emmett, right?
I don't know what the rest of you think, but I thought it was interesting to read a different line of thinking on this subject. Not a drastic thing, but just something not really said yet I don't think.
Thanks for listening! (or reading rather)
Wow Trisha, great insight. And I have another. Well I didn't have it, Ms. Meyer did.
Here is a QandA from the Lexicon Personal Correspondances:
Q. How could Rosalie underestimate Edward’s feelings for Bella so badly? What made her think that Edward would just go back to normal once Bella was dead? Especially since he had been already completely miserable when the two were just separated. Is she really that unobservant? Or is there more to it?
A. Rosalie is an egocentric person. One of the side effects of being born more beautiful than anyone else. Though she has her good qualities—loyalty, determination, self-discipline, and a very strong bond to her adoptive family—these qualities are often overshadowed by her self-absorption. She prefers to see Edward’s fascination with Bella as a strange quirk—and a transitory one at that. Because to Rosalie, of course, the main love story going on here is hers and Emmett’s. How could anyone else feel the same? Especially about some plain-jane human girl who Edward doesn’t even want to make immortal?
Ah, we’re getting deep into Rosalie’s well of denial now! See, Rosalie wanted Emmett, so she forced an unwilling Carlisle to change him. It turns into true love, and Rosalie has the staring role in the happily-ever-after-romance.
And then Edward falls for a human, and he insists on keeping her human. (Of course it’s different, since Emmett was bleeding to death, but, still) Rosalie can take this one of two ways. One: Edward doesn’t love this girl all that much. Two: he loves her more than Rosalie ever loved Emmett. Which way do you think Rosalie would prefer to look at it?"
Mary Ann again
So, Rosalie can't deal with the face that Edward, unselfish, amazing (although annoying to Rosalie) Edward might love Bella even more than Rosalie loves Emmett.
Fascinating stuff!
That's great! I actually remember reading that quite a while back and have forgotten about it. So she's also jealous that her love story is possibly being overshadowed by Edward and his human girlfriend, and also that people might think that Edward loves Bella more than she loves Emmett. Really Edward is just so unselfish, and Rosalie is extremely selfish.
There are just so many levels to Rosalie and also to her feelings about Bella, so many!
