The Music of Twilight

Erin asked in her recent post if we thought we could ever watch a movie or listen to music again without it reminding us of Twilight (paraphrasing). We've already had a lot of posts about music, so I want to know what music do you remember from the books? And what music have you heard lately that reminded you of the books? And why?

The most recent song I heard that reminded me of the books is the Chicago song that says "Tell me what kind of man would I be, living a life without any meaning, and I know that I surely could live(survive?) without you, but tell me what kind of man would I be?"

Anyhow, this made me think about how Edward still doesn't understand that while Bella could have lived without him, it would have been a lesser experience than what she has had WITH him. His fear of causing her death (either directly or indirectly), causes him to miss the fact that the greater loss would be not having had the experience, no matter how it ends.

Each person that we love enriches our life, and if they weren't there, we would have a hole. We might not know ever know that something was missing, and our needs might be filled in some other way, but no one could ever exactly replace that person. And I think that is one of the lessons that Edward is learning, and will continue to learn in the future.

So, as we all know, music is powerful. It can override weaker thoughts or emotions, and teach us lessons more quickly than any other means. So what are the lessons you have learned from the music of Twilight?

Thanks for the great post Cydne. When we talked about this another time, I remember thinking that it's such a big part of Twilight, the music. SM thinks so too, thus her play lists. Has everyone listened to those yet? It's really fun to listen to those songs and try to figure out which parts of Twilight you think they are about. She also listens to music while she writes, that's cool. There really is a lot of reference to music, mostly in Twilight I think. I think of how many CD's Edward has in his bedroom, wall to wall, neatly organized (he has plenty of time for stuff like that, or perhaps Alice did it for him), that's a cool thing to picture.
I don't think I've heard anything more specific lately that reminds me of Twilight besides all the other stuff on that first post, but I'm always listening. Now whenever I do hear something that we've pointed as "Twilight Music" I will only ever think of it that way I'm afraid. Actually, I have days where every love song I hear I try to make the words fit to work for something in the series, yep it's true, I'm realizing I do that some days no matter the song. I almost force it to work...:)

Anyway, I'm getting sleepy, I believe I may have more to say on this subject, I will look forward to more comments. But it's true, music plays such a big role in Twilight.

This was fun to read. I remember early in Twilight where she hears a Clair De Lune song (actually I'm pausing so I can find it, heehee) ((my book is conviently right here by my computer)) How fun, that took only about 30 sec...ok after Blood Type day when he insists on taking her home. He has been in the car listening 'to a CD' and when they get in she recognizes it as one of her favorites. "you know Debussy" he asks.
Ok, question, later (I'll go find it)oh brother, I can't find it...I know exactly where it is on the page (pathetic) but maybe I just missed it...anyway, it's another time - oh I guess you already said it, when Edward pulls out a cd in the car, the same one Bella listens to from Phil - but he also says "Debussy this" anyway, what is Debussy? I know I'm probably so dumb - but could someone clarify. Now I have to go search for that scene...anyway, sorry for the broken up comment!

Trish said...

Ok, thank you for pointing this out! I always thought I was the only one who doesn't know who or what "Debussy" is. I assumed it was a song or group, but then the way it's phrased again as "Debussy this" made me wonder again. So someone out there who does know, please clarify.

You know...I know where to find things on a page as well, I know if it's at the top or bottom - I thought I was the only one who felt pathetic about that...funny!

And I did the same things with my books last night, they were convenienty located next to me on my desk. I would read something or go to comment on something, and stop to look it up in one of my books, my husband thought that was quite funny. He'd ask something about how my research was going, I did have to laugh at myself, what was funny too is that it never took me very long to look something up that I wanted to find...

Sorry, this is getting off the subject of the post...please carry on...

Hey so I havent been on for a few days and I love all the comments about music. I had no clue what they were talking about in the book when they mentioned Debussy either so I looked it up on Wikipedia. Achelle-Claude Debussy was a french composer. The Clair de Lune is one of four parts or movements in his "Suite Bergamasque". I havent heard it but I guess its in tons of movies from Disneys Fantasia to Oceans 13. My stupid computer doesnt have speakers but I am going to listen to it as soon as I get home.

How funny, you cute girls. Can you see why I sometimes relate to Edward. I am a bit of a know it all. But like him I do try to admit when I am wrong or have no clue. This is very, very often. Just not as often when it comes to Twilight research. It is nice to have a subject/pastime in which you excel. Do you know it truly makes me happy to elaborate on these things?

Debussy is the composer of Clair de Lune. Edward pulls out his Linkin Park cd cover to show her what he is listening to (the same one that she was listening too when she was trying to NOT think about Edward, ha! He's not even real in my life and I can't stop thinking about Edward). I'm assuming he is teasingly comparing classical music to some fairly hard stuff, the Linkin Park. Of course she doesn't know yet why he had a Linkin Park cd. I wonder, was he listening to it because he went and purchased it to see why she liked it (of course he saw it in her room during observation hours) or do you think he already had that cd and liked that they had that in common too? The both like Debussy and they both like Linkin Park. I wonder. Midnight sun can only clarify but what do we all think?
Did I help with the original issue? I hope so.

lioness said...

Hi Danger. It is always fun when two people are commenting at the same time. Excellent research. Now I am going to listen to the entire suite myself.

betchafeelbetter said...

I thought the original comment was "Debussy to this?" meaning, "classical to rock?(or whatever that music is)."
I could be wrong, since my husband has my book today so I can't verify.
And I did remember after my post that SM listens to music while she writes; you can definitely tell. Thanks for mentioning that, RWV.

RWV, what you mentioned, how some days every love song you hear seems to fit somehow, that is what I was leading toward with this post. What is it about those songs that makes us think of the books; or what is it about the books that makes them apply to so many different songs?

I think one of the reasons is that SM's characters are so complex; just like us, they have strong and sometimes conflicting emotions and lessons to learn. The reason I threw this out there for everyone to comment on, is that we all see different lessons because of our own experiences. I'd like to know what you see in the books.

Edward's lesson that I mentioned in my original post is one that I am learning in my own life. When you are a fairly independent-minded person it can be easy to do things yourself rather than allow other people into your life at all, or rather than listening to their point-of-view. I am learning that I miss a lot when I do that, and, as mentioned, Edward missed some important things that way too.

Ok, I feel really dumb - of course that is what it means. Thanks! I found the place. Chapter 11 Complications in TW. Has has picked her up for school and it's the questions for Bella Day! He asks her what is in her CD player right now. In her head, she realizes that the one from Phil is still there. Anyway, I'll have to post my deeper thoughts on this another time!

lioness said...

Love Bella question day!
Love the picture in my mind of Edward's cd collection, stereo, and black leather couch, perfectly contrasting with the light decor in the room. Thanks for those images.

And before I continue: I am so sorry but sometimes I really do sound kind of snotty on here. I don't feel snotty. Love you girls!

Twilight Music. Ah well, my husband said, in the last week or so, something like
"not every love song you hear can remind you of Twilight".
And I thought, of course not, ridiculous, EVERY song reminds me of Twilight, not just love songs.

I can't remember another time in my life outside of the really important things like my husband and my kids (I have songs for them) that I have reacted to like this. Music making me think of characters, events, and feelings in a book. I think this is a first.

For me it all started the first time I heard Colbie Caillat sing Bubbly. I was taken back to moments when Bella and Edward are happy and secure (which isn't often, sad to say). When they are "out of the rain" because they are together, and when he kisses her nose, resulting in her losing control of course.
But it wasn't just the words, it was the entire feeling of the song, the emotions it created.
Well I shared this experience with some of you, and we are now all big Colbie fans. We all have her CD and take turns pointing out which songs are the most like Twilight. We have named most of them so far. My latest, most Twilighty song is "Magic".
It's really funny because I now think TW when I hear Colbie and assume the rest of the world does too. I have to remind myself that this singer did not rise to her fame by singing songs about Twilight.

Well since then my brain has sort of clicked on to Twilight mode with music too. Like RWV, I cannot hear a song on the radio without checking to see what part of Twilight it represents. I have gotten quite picky though. The words have to fit very closely now to rank on my playlist.

Jillybean shared SM's Twilight playlist with me and that was also an amazing experience. To feel the emotions of Twilight as SM felt them through music. It is a powerful experience and one that stretches your taste in music. But is was actually stunning how strongly the emotions were emanating from those songs.

I have come across several songs that seem like they really were written for Edward, Bella, and even Jacob. I will find them and share them soon. Of course the lullaby is one of my gems.

I love the words you posted from the Chicago song. They do pour out Edward's point of view don't they?

I think I asked this before but I will try it again. One very significant moment that I haven't found a song for is when Bella and Edward are together again in New Moon. There are more than enough Edward leaving songs. I searched a Lexicon post once and I think every song was about Edward leaving. Of course this is the most devastating event in the series so it conjures up very strong feelings. But his absence makes for one emotional reunion.
I don't even have a specific scene at the end of New Moon in my mind I am trying to match. Just the feeling. Bella's hole being healed. Edwards agony being quenched. There must be a million songs about love lost and then reunited but I can't find one.
I would love some help finding a song to represent this. So I welcome any suggestions.
If you missed the earlier posts on music there are some great thoughts and songs from E (for Erin/esmessence) and Jillybean and dangermagnet. To find them, go to labels on the right hand side of the blog. Click on "music" .

Was anyone patient enough to read this entire comment? (I will throw in my hee, hee here.)

Thanks for the info about Debussy DM and TM/MA. I would actually like to hear that song myself, then I could picture them listening to it. Did you listen to it DM? How was it?

So I have thought about it a little more, about what I may have learned from Twilight. And I think there are probably many, but one thing is how we view others. The way people act, or react about things and their body language, habits, etc. can say an immense amount about a person. It's another great reminder not to judge a person by the initial findings of them, especially if those are negative. I'm thinking of Rosalie here, and I do have a soft spot for her now. I know she still has her very vain and conceited side, but so many things about her stem from her horrific experience, one she was not meant to live to feel about or react from. She's not the only one to learn from. It's interesting how you feel about people sometimes until you really get to know them or at least know about them. Experiences can make people who they are. Tolerance and understanding are good things. Also, think of how frightened Bella was of Emmett at first, c'mon... Emmett!?
So, there's just a little thought here that I've had and decided to share.

Ruth said...

Huh. I just found all these new comments today and I laughed because last night I read Questions-for-Bella day and thought to myself, "what's Debussy?" So thanks for the research.

As for music, I haven't put much thought into this before. But all of your comments are making me want to find the perfect song for each chapter of the series. Wouldn't it be fun to put together a "sound-track" CD and make a copy for everyone?! Then we could have more TW moments while cleaning the house, doing the dishes, driving in the car, etc. It might even be better than having the "Books on Tape" version since music evokes such strong emotions.

P.S. Am I the only one who doesn't have a code name now?

betchafeelbetter said...

I love the idea of a Twilight music - my daughter has memorized Bella's lullaby since I burned it onto CD.

I liked RWV comment about Rosalie, too, because I had also been thinking about her. I had wondered why didn't Rosalie move on. I wasn't trying to be cruel, it's just that it's been 100 years or so.
But, Edward explains - to Jacob, I think - that vampires don't change easily, they are nearly like stone. So thinking about Rosalie that way, it would take quite a lot for her to move on, and it would be a very S L O W process. It would be difficult to overcome her upbringing, as well. So essentially, she is living all of that as if it were still relatively fresh in her memory. Makes me hope she could have her little one to bring her some bit of healing.

Trish said...

Yes, I already have a small list of "Twilight songs" that only remind of that. I too listen to my Colbie CD and feel the same way as you MA. I totally relate her to Twilight because of her songs. Of course Bubbly started it, but we're finding that there are others that are just as great. Plus seriously guys, the playlist that SM has on her website for Twilight, has some very emotion and thought provoking songs. It is so, so interesting and fun to listen to them and try to think whose feelings it's about or what part of the book or which scene it's referring to. Jillybean found them and gave me a copy, but any of you who are internet/music savvy could probably do it easily. Be warned, some of them have some bad language, so I don't listen to them with my kids. It's another awesome way to think about Twilight. I really do love Bella's lullaby too, and I love the name of it, I think it fits. It'd be cool for someone to try to play it, I of course have no clue about the piano or stuff like that, but some of you do!

I'm glad you mentioned the part about why it's taking Rosalie so long to get over things. That's just how it is for vampires. Maybe eventually, over a lot of time, she'll have been able to deal with it more and change things about herself. I really think that by the end of BD, we'll see a lot of changes in her since the beginning, we've already seen certain of her experiences do that. Look at all the ways Edward has changed, tons. It's really fun to look at it that way, and think of the other characters from beginning to end. Great thoughts...

And Ruth, you're not quite the only one without a code name. There's still Jenn (who at one time was trying to think of one, are you still??) and, well, I think that's about it. Oh, Amber too sometimes comments. We like Ruth, so no pressure, it is fun to think one up though. Have you ever take the quiz "Which Cullen are you most like?"

Ruth said...

I haven't even heard of that quiz. Where do I find it?

I told my husband about the code names last night and he started thinking up some for me--all having to do with the powerful Volturi (his favorite vampires of the series). Despite his professed non-interest in these books, he often asks about them . . . how'd they get all their money . . . how did "those Godfather ones" become so powerful . . . why don't the vampires fight with guns, don't they know they have to kill werewolves with a silver bullet? The list goes on and on. He gets a kick out of this blog and decided he'll start his own blog for all the husbands: How to Get Your Wife Back to Normal After Reading Twilight OR You Know Your Wife is Addicted to Twilight When . . .

(sorry, got a little off the subject of music, didn't I?)

Okay, Twilightmom, I've been looking for a song for you; and I found a few that have potential, mind you this is just what I saw from glancing through my old CD stash, they are no means the most perfect - you decide.

I found one by Debra Fotheringham (she's a Utah Artist). Her song "You are Truth" reminds me of when Bella has her epiphany that Edward is linked to her as strongly as she is to him. The words are here:
http://www.debrafotheringham.com/music10.html
and you can listen to it here:
http://cdbaby.com/cd/fotheringham
(It is the very last song, #10, and it get a little more upbeat right as it cuts off, sorry I couldn't find a full length demo).
It has just a reasurring calm and happy feel, sort of how I imagine that epipany to be - life changing in a quiet way.

The second one I found was just an instrumental. You can listen to the first bit here:
http://www.cdconnection.com/cd_and_dvd/part/84512?source=prcrnr
(again the song is the last track listed, "One More Thing").
I think it is a good depiction of the feeling of wellness that Bella notices when she crashes into Edward in Italy; I like how it starts out slow and quiet and then picks up, as if they are slowly realizing that they are together. I also imagine this scene as silent before they are together because there is no music in Bella's life without Edward.

And the last one I found that seemed to fit was Sarah McLachlin's "Angel." This one is a little melancholy, so I imagine it as how Bella feels when she is drowning and feels like Edward is close, OR how she feels when she wakes up after Italy and thinks she is imagining him being there and that he will wake up and leave.
Here are the lyrics:

and the music:

What a fun 'feast' of comments I got to enjoy from today. First of all, MA, of course I was patient enough to read your comment. Whenever there is a long one from you, I think "yeah, she really has something to say!!" Also, Ruth - I loved what you wrote about the Volturi, I totally can picture Marcos liking them...so funny!

I have to admit that my music life is pretty sad. My 5 disc CD player in the car consists of - 1)children's book on CD 2)2008 primary CD 3)Colbie Caillet 4)Raffi 5)another children's book on CD...so as you can see I had to sneak my favorite in. Usually I only get to listen to it if the kids are not paying attention (never) or if I'm on my way to the gym, by myself. And lately, I have just loved my Colbie music (thanks to MA, my husband bought it for me for Christmas). Like MA and RWV has added, each one is starting to seem like it was written for TW.

I am excited to listen to these new ones. And I need to email you BFB, I want the piano music to Bella's Lullaby!!

I vowed not to write tonight. I HAVE GOT to spend some time doing something else, like hanging out with my hubby, who I adore, but it is so fun to visit here. He caught me on the computer when I quietly disappeared, leaving him hanging out witht he 7 kids in the house. He called up and asked "Where are you, have you been dazzled by Edward?"
Well, what can I say? Yea.
I just wanted to give you all a link to Claire de Lune
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__ebvzAfaKQ&feature=related

There might be better but this one is lovely.

I have so much more to say but, alas, it will have to wait!

Trish said...

Ruth that is so funny about your husband's questions of Twilight and the Volturi, his thoughts definitely sound very husbandy. My husband too asks things about them, I think deep down they can't help but wonder...It made me laugh though, so great.
As far as the quiz, I will find out the link and you can take it. In fact maybe we can post a link to it on the blog, what do you think MA? That's how we found out who Erin is most like, thus her new name.
I will have to listen to all these songs posted BFB and MA, awesome you found them.
I have to say, I love Dave's comment about if you've been dazzled by Edward! How funny, and what an understanding husband to just make a witty little joke. (Well, it's not really a joke) And of course I loved reading your comment as well, I love when you (or any one of you) put so much extra thought into one.

lioness said...

Want to say more, but I am in trouble again. I'm being accused of not being able to even be in my office without sitting here at my desk doing this. Whatever!
Anyway I have added the "which Cullen are you?" test to the links list on the blog. Scroll down until you find "important links". Let me know if it has any problems.
Have fun ladies (and sneaky husbands).

betchafeelbetter said...

Music update: I vowed not to try to relate all the songs I heard on the radio today to Bella & Edward's love story. I even changed the station to get away from the love songs.

So what is the first line I hear after changing it? "I feel good! Da da Da da Da da duh." And my mind thinks, "Hey that's Jasper's nickname! He has a theme song!"

Trish said...

Funny, it just doesn't matter what song, what tempo, what words, whatever! It can all be linked somehow...awesome, Jasper has a theme song :)

Trish said...

Ruth, you'll have to let us know once you take the test. Thanks for posting the link MA.

I think I'm going to have my husband take it for fun, I'll have to share once he does...

lioness said...

Hi everyone. I have to be quick before the blog police come and shut me down again.
Ruth, we love you here. Husbands are such a kick. M
Many here do not have a TW nickname. Even our Jill's are still versions of the name Jill. But it would be fun for you to have an unofficial blog nickname. Really mine isn't that creative anyway, but I still like it.

Erin you are very entertaining to read. I love your CD list. I got my tickets this week btw.

I can't wait to try all of your songs BFB. And Jasper needed a song. Hooray Jasper. Sorry we led you down a musical road that takes months to get off of. (Not that we know, we are still on it)

Maybe Justin will be Rosalie. Wouldn't that be funny? I just mean her feistiness of course. Justin is actually a Rosalie/Emmett cross don't ya think?
I think Dave would be closest to Carlisle.
I think we could each come up with a play-list like Ruth said. I've got many chapters already covered.

lioness said...

I am going to start a new post, very soon, to recap our meeting. Please post Cullen quiz results for ourselves, or husbands, relatives, pets, etc. there so that we don't lose them someday. Thanks.

Trish said...

Yes, he is kind of a cross of those two. Definitely only the feisty side of Rosalie, Justin doesn't exactly stare in the mirror and declare his beauty to himself...at least I don't think he does. And I think you're right about Dave being most like Carlisle.
Good idea about posting quiz results there on the new post, hopefully coming soon, this is definitely getting off the subject of music and what we've learned from TW!

betchafeelbetter said...

Erin, I have to say, I have been where you are with your music. I have a Winnie the Pooh tape that I have heard at least a bazzillion times.

And, I just graduated from the U this last May. Two or three years ago, our introduction of ourselves was supposed to include our favorite movie we had watched over the summer. The only thing I had seen was Finding Nemo. Yeah, I felt really cool among all those young, single college students, admitting that the only thing I had seen in the theater in the last four months was a cartoon.

betchafeelbetter said...

Here is a gorgeous instrumental of Clair de lune that you can download.

http://www.flyupload.com/get?fid=1776284

lioness said...

Is it all orchestral or does it feature the piano. Even though we don't know what version Edward and Bella were listening too, I can't picture it without the piano.

Just wondering. I'll listen to it either way.

Still not really here.

Ruth said...

Okay, I took the quiz. It says I'm most like Esme. To be honest, I'm not sure if I agree. (I'm thinking I might have my husband take the test for me--like answer as if he were me. That might start an interesting conversation.) Actually, I really don't think that I'm like anyone in the books. So maybe Esme is the right answer since I do like taking care of people; although I'm not a mom yet. Anyway, just wanted you all to know the results. Thanks for the link!

lioness said...

The quiz is only about 50% accurate. It was very wrong for me. Others also disagreed with their results. I am going to start a new post on the subject so see you over there.

Trish said...

I guess I should wait for the new post on the subject, but I think I do agree with who I was most like, Jasper. Well, not 100%, but probably more than anyone else. I really am going to have Justin take it for himself, it will be very fun to see.

Has anyone listened to the instrumental link yet for Claire de Lune? I haven't heard it for years, I actually have a sad real-life story related to it, so I haven't wanted to. This might be a great way to replace that sad one with a sweet one though.

Ok, this is my first time replying to a blog - ever! I hope I am doing this right! I think I'm probably the newest member of the group, joining just after meeting Mary Ann at a party. My "real life" name is Marti
I wasn't able to see the playlists that everyone else here have been talking about, so maybe it's already been listed, but here goes..... The song that I have been listening to over and over lately is "Written in the Stars" by Elton John and LeAnn Rimes. It especially makes me think of when Edward decides he needs to leave Bella in New Moon. Here are the words, let me know what you think....

I am here to tell you we can never meet again
Simple really, isn't it, a word or two and then
A lifetime of not knowing where or how or why or when
You think of me or speak of me or wonder what befell
The someone you once loved so long ago so well

Never wonder what I'll feel as living shuffles by
You don't have to ask me and I need not reply
Every moment of my life from now until I die
I will think or dream of you and fail to understand
How a perfect love can be confounded out of hand

(Chorus)
Is it written in the stars
Are we paying for some crime
Is that all that we are good for
Just a stretch of mortal time

Is this God's experiment
In which we have no say
In which we're given paradise
But only for a day

Nothing can be altered, there is nothing to decide
No escape, no change of heart, no anyplace to hide
You are all I'll ever want, but this I am denied
Sometimes in my darkest thoughts, I wish I'd never learned
What it is to be in love and have that love returned

(Repeat Chorus)

Aahhh.... I think I'm going to have to go listen to it right now again.

betchafeelbetter said...

That does fit well. Welcome to the blog; we have all been eagerly awaiting some fresh blood (pun intended), since Twilightmom told us about meeting you.

I think the music playlists that are talked about are listed on Stephanie Meyer's site under the individual books. I haven't listed to them either. And if you click the "Music" label on the right hand of the blog page, there are some other posts & comments of songs that fit with Twilight scenes as well. I've definitely expanded my musical awareness(which has been sadly out of date since having my daughter) since listening to all the songs talked about here.

Trish said...

I don't think I've ever heard that song, well at least I'm not sure, maybe if I heard it I'd recognize it - you know how that goes. Do they play it on the radio? I'd really like to listen to it, the words are great and do fit with that sad, sad, devastating, heartbreaking, agonizing part of the series.

By the way, nice first post!

"Written in the Stars" is not a new song, but you can hear it if you go to YouTube and put in the name of the song. I agree, it is a very devastating part of Edward and Bella's story, but I just love the song anyway - it's very beautiful!

betchafeelbetter- I'm finally getting back to you (meaning I finally figured out how to reply to a post - yeah!!) I looked at some of the other comments about the music that reminds everyone of Twilight, and then went to YouTube and listened to the Colbie Caillat songs mentioned. I love 4 of the songs so much (Bubbly, Magic, Realize, & Feelings Show) that I downloaded them to my MP3 , they are so perfect for the books. What a wonderful way to help me think of Twilight during the day!

This is one of my favorite songs, not sure why since it's so sad: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cwWXjEYVxZ8. It is called "How Can I Not Love You" by Joy Enriquez. It's on the Anna & The King soundtrack. While listening to it, I think of Edward singing--what he would love to tell Bella after he leaves in NM. He "must be brave" and "go on" without her b/c he thinks it's better for her. In some ways, I can also picture Bella thinking these same things during those sad months without him. Okay, so, maybe it's a bit of a stretch trying to link it to Twilight, but I thought you could all give me your opinion on it. If you have a great imagination, you could also picture Jacob singing this about Bella after she chooses Edward over him. (Yikes, should I have not said that? ha ha)

betchafeelbetter said...

Thanks for that song, Ruth. I love that movie, but don't remember the song at all. Maybe its because I'm looking at it with Twilight-eyes now.

Anyhow, I don't think it is a stretch at all to imagine Jacob feeling this way - I actually imagined that Bella feels this way when she leaves Jacob too. She knows that there is something greater and that it is necessary, but part of her heart is still crying.

Not to dredge up painful memories, but how many people identify with Jacob/Bella because they have been through something like that?
