So again I am going to be bouncing around on these comments. I will definitely come back to chapter 20. BUt right now I am reading Fire and Ice. When Edward consents to answering Jacobs questions. Which, by the way, even though it is a very intriguing conversation, it a little unbelievable that he would.
But when Edward talks about how he felt when he thought he had lost Bella and then how he knew Jacob was thinking about that it would feel like she had died when she became a vampire. Well, it is just so obvious. I know Jacob does love her, but it just doesn't even compare with the depth and unselfishness of Edwards love.
So to be true and read the entire book, I am going to read that horrible, although well written kiss coming up, but I hope this will prepare me for it.
I know its hurting Jake for her to chose Edward but it cannot compare to what Edward went through for those 6 months followed by those 24 hours.
Okay, back to reading.

And I do think SM planting that imprinting part of the conversations is deliberate. About how if she chose Jacob Edward would wait because Jacob could leave her if he imprinted on someone.
But then Bella has already seen what her life would be like without Edward. And although she has to face that she has to lose Jacob, it seems to me she never, ever has to chose Edward. She just has to chose when and how to say goodbye to Jacob and realize that she doesn't want too.
Does that make sense. She never considers not being with Edward. Ever.

Yes,yes, I really caught that this time through - it just kept jumping out at me...even with all her Jacob struggles, she never even thinks about the remote possibility of questioning not being with Edward - that doesn't really make sense, but I was trying to say that , just like in Twilight, it was just never a choice - she never really had to make the decision, it was already there made for her, and Edward.
It is sad, so sad, for Edward when he expresses his gratitude to Jacob (I mean how hard would that be?) that he was there for Bella when he was not. And then the descriptions of a 'small' part of Bella breaking off when she makes the choice about Jacob - kind of heart wrenching. But, like you said, nothing compared to how she didn't live without Edward.
And, so sad that she did have to hurt Edward again and cry so terribly in front of him...I did think though (touching on the question of if Edward HAD to leave) I didn't mark it, but Bella does wonder if it would have been different with her decision about Jacob if she hadn't lost Edward once - maybe Edward had to help Bella through her sorrow about Jacob to really know and believe that SHE knew she made the right choice?!

Well, I'm just about there, to the Fire and Ice chapter. So I'm actually really glad I read these comments first, I think it will help me even more. I've done so much better this time through Eclipse, I've been able to understand things and points of view that Stephenie is trying to make. So far, I'm actually kind of proud of myself. Thanks for the things you guys pointed out! I'll be back...

(I just finished chapter 20 today!!! Hee hee)

One thing I noticed this time is how Jacob (sorry to bring him up again) responded so well when Bella broke up with him, so to speak. He even says that he'll "be good" by being her friend. Maybe he's just holding back all of his feelings, but he even talks to her about the details of getting married, changing, etc. But then in the epilogue he's freaking out again. It makes sense that he's upset, but why does he have such a strong reaction to Edward's note in the wedding invitation? I wonder if it's teenage jealousy or reality setting in, or something else.

Oh yeah, and I really enjoyed the Fire & Ice chapter. How sad that Jacob can do for Bella the one thing Edward wants most at that time.
