New Moon, chp 4-14

From "Waking Up" until "Killer"
So that's a huge range, but this is a book to read quickly and to try to get over quickly. The Jacob parts are sweet and enjoyable, the Edward voice parts are to be hurried through before they crush you. So sum up thoughts, insights, etc.

So it's been a REALLY long time since I read New Moon. I'm amazed how much I let go of. For instance, I remember very well Bella's hallucinations and her wanting to induce them. I didn't remember as vividly that it wasn't to hear his voice that started it, it was that she wanted to break her promise. Just like he'd broken his. He had promised to stay, as long as it was the best for her. Well Edward was the one who decided it wasn't the best, not Bella. So she is breaking her promise to not do anything reckless. I like that she takes that control. Of course she has no idea why he made her promise. No clue that his will to exist was over and hanging on the thread of her existence, even apart.

Because the pain of reading new moon has dulled with muliple readings, I actually look forward to hearing her description of his voice in her head. I have a terrible memory and can't ever remember voices or faces well. I would love to know if the sub-concious can conjure up such a realistic hallucination, because it makes Edwards voice sound amazing.

One more "oh-yea" moment.

I did not recall her comparing the feel of the motorcycle, to the speed and freedom of "a past life, flying through the thick forest, piggyback while HE ran." She then says "I stoptted right there, letting the memory break off in the sudden agony. I flinched."

Okay maybe the pain of reading this hasn't dulled, I've just learned to cope better. Opposition is going to make that ending sweeter than I will ever be able to put into words.

I remember the first time I read these chapters - I was nearly skipping all the other stuff to get to the next time we heard Edward's voice...notice the we in there!
I personally did not want to hurry through the Edward parts.
Just real quick - I also remember when I first saw those blank pages...Oct, Nov, Dec, Jan - seriously how perfect did SM do in making US feel as empty and dead as Bella must have felt?

Yes, I forgot how well SM describes Bella's pain. This time I kept trying to physically imagine what that must have been like. I tried to picture my life without my dh--just so I could be in the moment with Bella.

And of course, once again, I couldn't figure out why it took Bella so long to realize that Jacob was a werewolf!

True, she has her clueless moments. But, they are always when she is in an extremely emmotionally vulnerable state. So I cut her that slack.

While I read these chapters this time, I tried to imagine how she must have been acting through all those months in her "zombie" state. She refers to it a lot in the first few chapters after she "wakes up" - things like not remembering people's change in appearance, the way they react when she starts talking again, and I think of the description of how she looks physically and the involuntary movements she seems to do (I think it's from Jacob later on). Again, I really like Jacob in these chapters especially, I can almost feel her need to have his company. A couple of sad things were when he turns into a werewolf for the first time and won't talk to her for a couple of weeks (I believe it's on your list MA). Also, when she can barely watch Sam and Emily together because of the reminder.
Also, I remember when I first read NM, and she got the stomach flu and spent the whole day in the bathroom sick. Then she ended up in her bed not knowing how she got there. I thought that it was maybe Edward who took her to her bed, at that point I wasn't positive what was going on with the hallucinations and his voice, and where he was of course. Sad to find out I was wrong, but sweet of Charlie to try to take care of her still.
I really like the scene in Emily's kitchen with all the boys, I love reading about their friendships. I especially like when Embry and Jared are betting over whether or not Bella will vomit in the truck ride back to the house, Jared thinks she will and Embry says, "I bet she's tougher than that. She runs with vampires." Love it! :)

Okay, waking up really killed me. But I do love the description of how she breaks free of the fog. I too kept waiting, and yet thinking that if the fog returned, it would be so sad. SM did such an excellent job of describing what those moments were like.

And while you all know that I am almost club Jacob (don't freak out, I am still club edward!), I remembered how much I truely love Jacob, from the very moment he comes out of the house. I love the sun he immediately brings to her life, and how she just realized what a happy person he is. We all know people like that, those that just bring out the best in us. And I think the SM created such an excellent counter in Jacob. It is true that Jacob is the sun, and Edward is the moon. And in some ways, Bella's life isn't complete during each phase without one or the other.

Okay, I just chapter 9, where they go to the movie and Mike and Bella get the flue. And she is running through all the reasons she should stay away from Jacob and not lead him on make me think that Edward felt the same way, sort of. I know I have said this before, but I think that Bella needed to know what it is like to care for someone and know that you shouldn't. It is different from the fact that she knows she shouldn't care for Edward. That is because of danger. But I think that Edward felt the same way about her that she felt about Jacob. He didn't want to lead her on at first, which is why he tried to keep his distance. Now, he didn't last as long as Bella does with Jacob. But I think that is because he was so lonely and Bella came through his life like meteor. But as we well know, Bella had to experience everything in this book, and I think she had to see things from Edwards' beginning perspective.

As for hearing Edwards voice, I cannot tell you how disappointed I was when it turned out to be a hallucination. I was certain that Edward had somehow developed telepathic powers and he was really watching over her. In fact, that is what made me turn the pages, because I thought he would get angry enough that she wasn't listening to him that he would appear to yell at her and then leave again. So even this time, as I read through it, I kept thinking, surely he is really aware of what she is doing. But I do love the way her subconscious brings up his voice, inflection, attitude so perfectly.
